2010 Priority: Asthma (Resources)
The Region 1 (New England) Office of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is focusing on asthma as a Healthy People 2010 priority. Working with the New England Public Health and Managed Care Collaborative (NEPHMCC), comprised of regional public health and managed care leaders, the Regional office seeks to improve medical management of pediatric asthma. The Regional Office and NEPHMCC facilitate state-based implementation of comprehensive guidelines developed by NEPHMCC, which include recommendations for consistent implementation of uniform asthma management plans, better coordination among providers, and improved payer coverage. Together with the regional offices of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD), DHHS also created partnerships with state, local and non-government organizations to form the Asthma Regional Coordination Council (ARCC), which focuses on the environment’s impact on asthma. The ARCC is finalizing a twelve-point plan that includes improved surveillance, educational activities, and recommendations to address environmental issues in homes and schools. For more information, contact Albert K. Yee, MD, MPH, Regional Health Administrator for Region 1 (617-565-1507 or ayee@os.dhhs.gov).
