2010 Priority:
Promotion of Sexual Health and Responsible Sexual Behavior (Resources)

Our nation faces an array of public health problems related to sexual behavior, including sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancies, and sexual violence and abuse. What is also troubling is the fact that certain groups—including minorities, the socio-economically disadvantaged, and women—are often disproportionately impacted by these problems. Eliminating health disparities is an overarching goal of Healthy People 2010. Region IX is making a special effort to coordinate the activities of its Offices (Minority Health, Women’s Health, Population Affairs, Pacific Health and HIV/AIDS Special Project) to focus attention on this priority area. Major partners involved in advancing this priority are the region’s Title X Family planning grantees, who operate comprehensive clinical, educational, and community outreach services. In an effort to eliminate disparities in sexual health, interventions are targeted to the most socio-economically vulnerable communities, where community members have less access to health education. Besides the education and counseling available in the 300+ clinical settings, services are also provided in schools, churches, detention facilities, shelters for the homeless and victims of domestic violence, and at substance abuse treatment centers.
