2010 Priority: Assist States with Tools to Work with Community Associations with a Focus on Health Disparities (Resources)
Last May, in partnership with Northwestern University’s Asset-Based Community Development program, Region V hosted a conference for state and local health departments to (1) learn how to map local neighborhood associations, (2) determine what they are doing surrounding Healthy People 2010, and (3) how to engage those associations. There are now two pilot sites, Freeport, Illinois, and the Mapleton Fall Creek Neighborhood in Indianapolis, Indiana, where these tools are being implemented. Additionally, mini-awards in these minority neighborhoods will be awarded to help catalyze Healthy People 2010 efforts around community-driven interests.
A project is underway to evaluate local public health/Healthy People 2010 objectives through a cooperative agreement with the State of Wisconsin’s Division of Public Health in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Each local public heath department used CDC criteria to develop their own objectives based on community needs and interests.
